Of course I know who Dan Ryckert is and who doesn’t? He’s an American treasure that belongs in a museum.Aside from that, the book he has written is one wonderful ride through Dans life. At first I wasn’t sure how it was going to be written until about page 30 or 50 and then I got really into it. When trying to tell my roommate some of the stories I couldn’t even finish them because they’re just too damn funny and Dan does a wonderful job of playing storyteller here. So if you want to laugh and be inspired by a guy who took chances, then read this book.
You’ll swear Dan was using cheat codes at a game we all play called, Life!

The Dumbest Kid in Gifted Class Dan Ryckert 9780692798089 Books Reviews
This book is for fans of Internet and Video Game personality Dan Ryckert. Anyone else will probably think it's dumb. And it IS, but that's why we love Dan. This tells a bunch of his dumb stories about his dumb life. How is he even still alive?! But it's a lot of fun!
The escapades of an awkward nerd, not unlike the kid I once was. Read this in a waiting room at a hospital. My chuckles and grins brought lots of stares from the depressed elderly folks around me. "He's wearing a gorilla suit!" That old guy just didn't get it.
I've listened to every Bombcast with Dan and watched damn near every video since he started. I knew probably a majority of these stories, yet this only enhanced my enjoyment of the book. Make no mistake, Dan is a gigantic moron and this book showcases that brilliantly. I can't wait to hear more nonsense from him.
Dan Ryckert is an interesting fellow. If you've heard him talk about... well, anything, I'm sure you have many, many questions regarding what makes him tick. This book is a very funny collection of tales from his life, and while they certainly won't answer all of your questions, they do allow for a certain amount of insight into the inner workings of Giant Bomb's man of mystery.
I first head Dan Rykert from the Comedy Button podcast where he told the stories of starting twitter beef with Jose Canseco and posting the infamous George Brett pants-crapping video. I was hoping to get some more of those stories in this book but they were never mentioned, so that was kind of a bummer.
Other than that, the stories of his childhood are great. Funny and insightful. Worth reading, whether or not you're familiar with Rykert. I tore through it surprisingly fast.
Dan Ryckert did a wonderful job in providing a collection of short stories that anyone familiar with his podcast/video work will immediately hear in his own voice. When the words "cool dude" come across the paper, you can't help but smile and laugh.
One of the biggest problems with autobiographical books is that the author's voice tends to change when moving from spoken to written word, regardless of the presence of a ghost writer. This makes the book feel artificial and detached from its subject matter, and the distance makes it hard to believe in or even empathize with the author.
I'm glad to say that is not a problem in "The Dumbest Kid in Gifted Class". I've been following Dan Ryckert's work for nearly six years now, and one of the things that amazes me the most is his ability to switch between two different voices one that is thoughtful and smart; and another that is impulsive and really, really dumb. He is very good at channeling these two sides of his narrative and painting a picture of the situations portrayed in the book.
The book focuses on lesser known episodes of his life tales from college, going to Catholic school, and pulling pranks are just some of the things you will find in it. Ryckert deliberately avoids topics that have been discussed in Game Informer's Replay and Super Replay shows, or Giant Bomb's Giant Bombcast, Danswers, and the podcasts with his dad Paul, although some inevitably find their way into the book. This is both good and bad it gives his longtime fans new stories, but the lack of more of the old stories would have been helpful to readers who are not familiar with Ryckert's life. I know it is unlikely that people who do not know Ryckert will buy the book, but having more stories about how weird he is with food, the dynamics between him and his dad, or the spontaneous one-liners and reactions of his grandpa Joe would have been very welcome.
Potential readers will also like to know that the book is laugh-out-loud funny, and everything you would expect from Ryckert. I would guess that even people who do not know him would find this entertaining and at least be curious enough to look up some of the content he has been featured on over the years.
All things considered, "Dumbest Kid" is a light, fun read, and I highly recommend it. The fact that the edition has slight formatting issues or that Ryckert's discourse at times seems a little too cruel when talking about perfectly innocent people are certainly bummers and distractions, but they do not mar the amount of fun and enjoyment the reader gets from the book. Fans of Dan Ryckert should definitely buy this book, as it is the closest thing to everything you wanted to read from him since "Anxiety as an Ally". People who have no idea who he is are going to like it, too, but will feel a little lost without a good introduction to his character and circumstances.
TL; DR Dan Ryckert is the Jesus of dumb. Buy this book. Read this book. It's funny.
